Description: Early view looking south on Emmett Street from the King Street corner in Smithton, Tasmania. The street has a sandy surface and there are drays, bullock teams and a cow in the street and in the background the forest is still in evidence. Initially King Street was the main route into Smithton from Stanley. In later years the sandy road was replaced by a metal one that veered inland via Smokers Bank. In the early 1900s after the road was changed the King Street route fell into disuse and Emmett Street became the main commercial area and some King Street shops were re-located with bullock teams to Emmett Street.
