When heavy seas began to break over the vessel some of the crew rushed onto the rigging. The bumping of the ship caused gelignite in the cargo to explode, killing the Captain and all but the 8 men on the rigging. Seven of them never made it to shore. The sole survivor was 29 year old Oscar Larsen who had clung to a piece of wood and been buffeted by waves for 5 hours before being washed ashore.
