Description: This building is situated at No. 44 William Street in Westbury, Tasmania. Mehegan's General Store was built in 1893 for Mr. John Megehan after the first shop built on this site in 1888, was destroyed by fire. The new store and residence was a single storey structure. In 1919, Mr. F.H.Mehegan took control of the country store. In 1931, Mehegan's Store was entirely re-modelled and a second storey was added to the building to cope with the ever-growing business. In mid-1990, the Mehegan family sold the business which had been originally started by Mr. Edward Mehegan in the Westbury suburb of St. Giles in 1848. Various small business ventures have operated from this address in recent years. The image was captured from the north-eastern direction in 1961.
