At 19 he became second mate of HARRIET MCGREGOR before transferring to steam and becoming captain of SOUTHERN CROSS, TASMANIA, MANGANA, SOUTH ESK and HUON. He lost his job after he'd lost 2 of the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company's vessels. However he went on to become Master Warden of the Marine Board, entered Parliament, became Premier and in 1938 was Governor of Tasmania.
