      Description: John McGregor was born on board the DRUMMORE in 1830 en route to Hobart. He became foreman of his brother Alex's shipyard and laid down a slip in 1869. He was described as the 'ace of shipbuilders' in Tasmania and built, among others, PETREL, HALLY, BAYLEY, HARARIET MCGREGOR and LOONGANA. The McGregor brothers, Alexander, James and John, arrived with their parents in 1830. (John was born en route.) They became prominent in Hobart's maritime community. Alex had a shipyard on the Domain and was partner with James in McGregor Brothers, ship owners and merchants. They owned many vessels including the whalers, EMILY DOWNING, ASIA, DERWENT HUNTER FLYING CHILDERS and WATERWICH; the London-Hobart traders, HARRIET MCGREGOR LUFRA and HELEN and a number of Intercolonial vessels which also served in New Zealand and Mauritius.
