Description: The original Duck River Butter Factory at Smithton, Tasmania. The building opened in 1904 and was surrounded by bush and mud. From these humble beginnings it went on to be Tasmania's biggest single unit butter factory with a record production in 1971-72 season of 4,106 tons. The Duck River butter label is still in use today although the butter is no longer produced in Smithton.
