Description: Smithton Cannery, once the Dewpoint Dehydration Factory, shortly after it reopened in 1952. A lady is wheeling a push bike out the front and another figure is in the doorway with a car parked under the balcony. The Federal Government vegetable dehydration factory opened in Smithton, Tasmania in 1943 to process a range of crops like carrots and parsnips. After a temporary closure after WWII WD Peacock bought the factory for canning vegetables. Iniatially it handled peas and root crops. It is still in operation today although there has been several owners and it now handles frozen vegetables and other products.
