A tender was invited in the Launceston "Examiner" newspaper on the 2nd of January 1850 from the construction of a "Toll House" at "Sillwood" situated at the boundary of the "Sillwood" and "Quamby " estates. Mr Charles Clayton was the earliest gate keeper to occupy the modest dwelling. Varying charges were made for different types of vehicles in that era at the "Toll Gate". Owners of livestock were charged a certain lump sum per head. Horsemen attracted a charge and only pedestrians were allowed to pass free. The money raised was used for the upkeep of the road. The "Toll Gate" was abolished in 1859. This home is a fine example of an original former "Toll Gate House" that is still standing in Tasmania today. At the rear of this property a small cemetery was established in by-gone days. The first of the four registered burials took place there in 1864. The last funeral at the "Sillwood"cemetery was held for Mr. Michael Fay on the 9th of July 1905. This image was captured from the south eastern direction in May 2004.
