      Description: Captain John Peyton Jones arrived in Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) with the 63rd Regiment Of Foot on the 16 October 1830. After a short time, he was placed in charge of a military party at Eagle Hawk Neck on the Tasman Peninsula, south of Hobart. On his initiative a chain line of savage dogs were placed across the narrow isthmus at Eagle Hawk Neck to prevent the escape of convicts from the work gangs in the Port Arthur area. Governor Franklin appointed John Peyton Jones to the position of Police Magistrate at Westbury on the 30 July 1841. Later he was elected the first Warden of the Westbury Municipal Council in 1863. Mr Jones died at the age of 82 on the 21 November 1891 and was buried in the Anglican and General Cemetery in Dexter Street, in Westbury,Tasmania.
