Description: The first beacon off North Point Reef Stanley was erected in 1899. The cutter "Dart" is in background. Left to right - Capt W. Freeburgh, Tom Freeburgh, Mr D. G. Edwards (Stanley Harbourmaster). The beacon was simply an iron post embedded in the reef supported by three iron stays and on top it had a circular red painted top. Therefore while it was an advantage during the day it was no use at night. So in 1907 moves began to replace it with Circular Head's first lighthouse. Fishermen and mariners are familiar with the North Point beacon situated on the reef at the northern most point of the Stanley Peninsular. This beacon marks a reef that extends more than a kilometre to the northeast of the actual point of land. The reef has claimed several shipwrecks the first was in 1864.
