Description: Cast iron bell reputed to be from the American whaler South Carolina. Bell has slotted tang for suspension but no distinguishing marks. The South Carolina (from New Bedford) was condemned when she arrived in Hobart in 1851. Richard Cleburn purchased her and moored her near his property at Risdon Cove. Two families lived on board until the 1860s when she parted from her anchors and beached. She was eventually broken up for her copper fastenings. The bell hung at St Aidans from the 1930s after being transferred from the Cleburne estate. (Previously registered as 1996-016)
