The winnower was used to clean grain by separating the seeds from the husks. This was done by turning a handle which turns the paddles of the winnower to create wind. The wind is directed to the three sieves at the front. The sieves are different sizes, the smallest being at the bottom. The small seeds then went into a bag at the side of the winnower. Richard Howard used this on his property at Woodsdale.
