Description: This two storey brick structure is situated on the corner of King and William Streets in Westbury Tasmania. The Westbury Inn was built for Mr. James Butterworth Whitehead in 1833. The former army sergeant had been serving under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Shadforth at the Westbury Garrison before he took his discharge in March 1831. Mr. James Earle was the first licensee of the business which opened on the 21st. December 1833. In 1836 Mr. Earle moved to the nearby village of Carrick and took control of the Carrick Inn. Mr William John Forbes held the licence at the hotel from 1836 until 1842. In 1843 Mr. Robert Mervyn Lyall who was a former convict was granted a licence to manage the public house. It was in this era that the large assembly room was built at the western end of the main structure. Mr. Lyall was the licencee for many years and during the 1850's operated in partnership with his son-in-law Mr. W. Lawson. Lyall Street in Westbury was named after this popular inn-keeper, landlord, businessman and race horse owner. In 1864 Mr. Lyall built a large brick brewery at No. 157 King Street in the town. Mr.& Mrs Lyall purchased the hotel in the 1860's and by the mid-1870's, Mr Daniel O'Meara was the manager. The Phillips Family held the licence in the 1880's and Mr. Thomas Harding operated from this address in the 1890's. In the first part of the 20th. century, the Herbert Family resided there and operated a butcher shop. Mr. Douglas Swan also managed a butchers business at this site in latter years. In the mid 1960's the former inn was extensively renovated and then used as a private dwelling for many years. Today the building trades under the name of the Old Coaching Inn and offers tourist accommodation. This image was captured from the north-eastern direction in 1865.
