Howard, Dudley

Date: 1942 -

Description: This aluminum ring was made from the remains of a Japanese plane which was shot down during the first attack on Darwin. Dudley Howard was stationed in Darwin in the 40th Battalion when the air raid took place. The plane was damaged and came down in some hills a fair way from Darwin. Dudley was a member of a rescue party sent out to find it. It took them about 3 days to locate the plane and they found the pilot was dead and the companion injured. It took them a few days to get back to their base. Several of the men took aluminum from the plane as souvenirs. Dudley made this ring from a piece which originally had the 40th battalion colour patch in it made from knitting needles in the colours of red and white. Dudley sent this ring to his mother, Martha Howard. Dudley's sister Doreen Dare has donated it to the Woodsdale Museum.
