Description: Title on photograph states: Stanley - 'Balfour Electric Railway turning the first sod'. It was performed by His Excellency the Governor Sir Harry Barron Tasmania May 4th, 1911. The rail service was slow to start and while the Stanley, Tasmania, to Trowutta, Tasmania, line opened in 1911 but the Stanley to Myalla link was not completed until 1922. This line connected the district with the States rail system.
