Description: This building is situated on the Meander Valley Road in Westbury, Tasmania. The two-storey structure was built for Mr. George Clancy in 1854 and was known locally as Clancy's Hotel. With the arrival of the railway through the district in 1871, the hotel's name was changed and it traded under the name of The Great Western Hotel. The licence for the hotel expired in 1893 and the building was then named Westella. Members of the Clancy Family sold the structure in 1894 to Mr. William Henry Davey who two years later sold the dwelling to the Local Council Clerk, Mr. Edney Alfred Morris. In 1902 Mr. Morris sold the former inn to Dr. B.A.Anderson. Mr. Walter French operated a shop and stayed here until 1909. A one-armed man named Mr. Smith managed a business there for a short period in that era. Mr J.V.Shanahan operated a gentlemen's tailoring business at this address also. In 1915, Dr. Anderson sold the home to Mr. William John Eley, who was a storekeeper and opened a store in the building which he carried on until his death. Mr. George Willian Scott purchased the business in 1930. Mrs. Eley gave the store the name Quamby Store because of its close proximity to the Quamby Estate and the name was carried on by Mr. Scott until his death in 1939, and then by his widow who died in 1972. Quamby Store closed in 1973 and was used as a private dwelling until 1981. In recent years various business ventures have operated from No.1 Meander Valley Road. The building has now reverted back to a private residence. This photograph was taken from the south-eastern direction in May 2000.
