E.H.Purdon Port and Starboard Lights

      Date: 1886 -

Description: Port (red) and starboard (bluish green) lights from the fishing vessel E.H.Purdon. Two square brass frames, inset with tinted, convex lenses. Some corrosion, red light has damaged frame. E H Purdon was an auxiliary ketch of 46 feet, 17 tons, built at Hobart in 1886 and originally working the river trade out of Hobart. Converted in 1902 to fishing, she went aground on the south side of Sellars Point (Babel Spit) on the east coast of Flinders Island on 13th December 1938, and was partly salvaged by the Holloway family. The lights were recovered from a nearby sand dune in June 1977 by David Murray-Smith.
