Nurse Grace Bates, a Circular Head Identity

Description: Nurse Bates was a midwife in Circular Head. Grace May Bates was born in Stanley, Tasmania. She never married and was dedicated to nursing. In July 1914 she advertsied that she was available to go to patients in Stanley and the surrounding districts. In July 1921 she bought a house at 100 Emmett Street and moved to Smithton to live. For many years her transport was by horse. 'Her duties as a midwife, were to live in, deliver the baby at home, become cook and housekeeper for the family for up to three weeks and above all make sure the new mother did not so much as place a foot on the floor for 10-14 days'. She would have delivered hundreds of babies in Circular Head. She died in 1960 aged 68 and is buried in the Scotchtown cemetery.
