Description: Steel cutlass with curved blade and foil and a brass handle. Identified as British or American Cutlass, c.1814. This cutlass is the type used in the French wars and was frequently used by merchantmen of the period. It was recovered from the wreck of the Spec and was handed down in the Everett family of Cape Barren Island. Mrs Everett Senior of Thunder & Lightning Bay (Cape Barren Island) eventually gave it to the Rev. Thomas Cloudsdale in 1944. He in turn donated it to Dick Fowler for the museum collection. The Spec hit a reef off Preservation Island on October 29, 1870 and was then beached off Clarke Island.
