Tussock Cutting Sickle

      Date: 1920 -

Description: Mild steel reaping hook or sickle, with a short wooden handle. Used for cutting tussock grasses which were then strewn on the floor of mutton-bird processing huts to keep the compacted earth and, later, concrete floors clean and keep down the dust. It was generally the job of children to cut fresh tussock grass every morning. One of the original artefacts in the replica mutton-bird processing shed.
