Description: Brilliant cut topaz from Killiecrankie Bay, Flinders Island, mounted in plastic display box. Topaz is probably the first gem or mineral exported from Australia. It has been taken from the Killiecrankie area on Flinders Island since at least 1803 and is known locally as Killiecrankie Diamond. Sir Joseph Banks donated topaz from New Holland to the British Museum in 1811. Significant quantities of the topaz were collected and sent to London for the Crystal Palace Exhibition, opened by Queen Victoria in 1851, and were exhibited at the Paris Exhibition in 1855.
