Description: A large, heavy, iron naval mine, which was washed up on the Blue Rocks beach, Flinders Island, on February 6th, 1993. The mine was found by Luke Toonen. Identified as the type used in mine sweeping exercises in Australian waters in the period 1971-72. Has the inscription "sand filled" on a brass plaque and "No 59" stamped on the top. When found it was transported to Liddell's gravel pit by bomb disposal experts and the top blown off. It was found to be unarmed. The top is with the mine but separate and in a damaged condition.
