![]() Click thumbnail for a larger image. | Description: Over the years James McGregor was master of a number of whalers including FLYING CHLIDERS and ALADDIN His last command in the early 1880s was EMILY DOWNING. On one trip he lost 5 young crewmen whose boat was towed off by a whale in the Australian Bight. McGregor searched for them for 3 weeks without success. The McGregor brothers, Alexander, James and John, arrived with their parents in 1830. (John was born en route.) They became prominent in Hobart's maritime community. Alex had a shipyard on the Domain and was partner with James in McGregor Brothers, ship owners and merchants. They owned many vessels including the whalers, EMILY DOWNING, ASIA, DERWENT HUNTER FLYING CHILDERS ans WATERWICH; the London-Hobart traders, HARRIET MCGREGOR LUFRA and HELEN and a number of Intercolonial vessels which also served New Zealand and Mauritius.
