Top assembly held in place by four brass screws. One of the battery operated lights used at Whitemark Aerodrome after 1979 and before the installation of pilot operated electric runway lighting in 1992. There were three types of lights with different coloured lenses: blue for marking the runway, red for marking obstructions such as fences and white for apron lighting. Lights ran on two Eveready 509 batteries and were turned on by pushing a pin in the side. Operating instructions are on the side, together with the inscription "ARTCRAFT ELF/70/1 Made in Victoria 3131". Whitemark was the last aerodrome in Australia to get electric runway lighting. The aerodrome OIC invariably was in trouble for requesting too many batteries from HQ. A quick written reply to the stores manager explaining the plight of the Whitemark aerodrome being without electric runway lighting produced a carton of batteries.
