Shovel Handle

      Date: 1900 -

Description: This handle was recovered from the Tasmania Mine by the Beaconsfield Gold JV in 2003. Found lying next to a timbered ore pass at the east end of the 1500 ft level. It would have been left behind by the tribute workers when this level flooded after the pump rod broke and the mine closed Nov 21, 1914. Still visible are 'W.W.' on the side - so it possibly once belonged to William Watters, a worker who died in a fall of approx 250 cubic feet in 1910.
