Description: Two handmade wooden seats, constructed of oil company hardwood packing cases, each with a pine plank nailed to the top to form the seat. The stamped inscription on the side of both boxes reads VACUUM OIL COMPANY PROPRIETARY LIMITED, MADE IN AUSTRALIA. The stamped inscription on the ends reads, in one case, LAUREL Kerosene, 150 Fire test, VACUUM OIL COMPANY PTY LTD, the other PLUME MOTOR SPIRIT, VACUUM OIL COMPANY PTY LTD.One box has a hessian bag sitting on it. Kerosene boxes (packing cases) used to be readily available from the oil companies, two four gallon cans fitted into each box. The boxes were invariably recycled to make items of furniture. These seats were used in mutton-bird processing sheds for the women to sit on when plucking the birds. The bird would be rested on the hessian bag and one end of the hessian used to rub off the fine down after the bird was scalded. Two of the original artefacts in the replica mutton-bird processing shed.
