Description: Tasmanian oak mantelpiece with shelf and some ornamental carving, thought to date from 1911. It is fitted to the wall above and around the fireplace in the classroom of the original private school at Emita, Flinders Island. The dwelling containing the schoolroom was built in 1908-09.for Walter Hamilton Byng Lyall who lived and taught there, operating initially with 5 pupils. It became the first government subsidised school on Flinders Island when he was granted a government subsidy from 1912 to 1921. After the school closed the house was used as a private residence housing the Treloar family of 10. It was bought in 1942 by Dick Fowler, who opened it as a private museum in 1964, and subsequently donated it to the Furneaux Historical Research Association.
