![]() Click thumbnail for a larger image. | Description: Captain Lovitt was about 29 years old when he commanded the DEVERON on her first voyage out of Hobart as a whaler in 1829. He returned after a short voyage with 200 tuns of sperm oil, 20 tons of bone and her flag at half mast. She had lost 6 men when one of her boats had capsized. Later Lovitt was master of MARY ELIZABETH and whaling at Otago when the Maoris seized a dead whale and a whale boat with its gear. The crew escaped but all later deserted ship in New Zealand.
