Description: Before he became Harbour Master of Hobart in 1879 Riddle commanded many vessels and had numerous adventures. Returning from Auckland in 1861 his schooner TYNE was wrecked off Cape Pillar in bad weather. Most were saved by a rope strung to a cliff by the courageous mate. Nine years later on a voyage to Adelaide he lost the barque EUCALYPTUS when she struck a rock now named after the vessel. And in 1876 he had to fend off Malay pirates on a trip to Shanghai and Yokohama.
