Description: A pair of wooden parallel rulers, made of Tasmanian Blackwood, with brass hinges. These rulers belonged to Victor Holyman, who followed his father to sea at the age of 16 and was ship's master at 25. Holyman served as a 2nd mate on the Naval Tanker 'Aragaz' at Gallipoli. He enlisted with the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) in the U.K. in 1916. He later served with the Royal Air Force (RAF) when the RNAS and the RFC (Royal Flying Corp) combined together to form the RAF in 1918. Returning to Tasmania after World War I, he set up Holyman Bros. Airlines with his brother Ivan, while remaining master of the Wareatea, Woniora and the Wannon. He was a pilot for A.N.A. flying Bass Strait. His wife, Hazel became A.N.A.'s first air hostess, possibly the first in Australia. On October 19th 1934 he was flying the "Miss Hobart" De Havilland Dragon Rapide 8 (DH8) when she went down with 10 passengers between Victoria and Flinders Island. When another DH8 was later lost off Whitemark, it was found that the spruce main wing beam had broken. It is thought that the same fate had befallen Victor's aircraft. The rulers were among Victor's effects collected by his wife from the bridge of the Wannon. The rulers came to Bill Renouf , the donor, as the fourth generation master.
