Such vessels often had sails patched with hessian cut from chaff bags. The men were often smoke-dried by the fire-pot which usually stood in the hold in bad weather and on deck in good. Several are known to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning when a fire pot was kept alight in the poky cabin.
