Thomas Laughton

      Description: Captain Thomas Laughton was the son of Captain John Laughton (GSL233) who was drowned while examining the wreck of the Hope for which he had purchased salvage rights. Thomas was captain of the government schooner, Eliza c1840 and took government officials between Hobart, Port Arthur and Macquarie Harbour. Among his passengers were Irish prisoners, Smith O'Brien and Mitchell. He left for the Californian gold rush in 1849, joined the Hudson Bay Company, went north from Vancouver and was never heard of again.
