The modest timber cottage was built in c.1850's on a five acre land grant No. 111 for a retired military soldier named George Conboy. More than 160 five acre allotments were granted to former military personnel in this Westbury suburb named Queenstown in that era. The men were obligated to do twelve days service a year. The home was given to the military pensioners after seven years provided their conditions of service were fulfilled. In 1858 the cottage and land was purchased by Mrs. Jessie Brittle was a native of Scotland. Mrs. Brittle was a dressmaker, and occupied this dwelling until her death at the age of 90 on the 14th of February 1902. The property then passed into the hands of Mr. Patrick Conboy who lived here for a number of years. Mr. Albert Cooney was the next owner of the house and land. The building has remained unoccupied in recent years and is a good example of an original pensioner's cottage. The photograph was taken from the south-western direction in April 1991.
