Building second beacon - North Point Stanley

      Date: 1918 -

Description: The building of the second beacon on North Point Reef Stanley in 1918. Capt. W. E.Leggett and his ketch Active was engaged to work on the new beacon. The new beacon was built on the same site as the original one. It was 8.5 metres high comprising of a 5.2 metre reinforced concrete pillar with a 3.3 metre galvanised iron mast on top. All materials had to be brought by the Active from Stanley five miles away and were lightered to the reef. The beacon took two months to build often hampered by the weather and the tides. The workmen are seen here lifting the boxing onto the tower ready for concreting.
