Description: View of Balfour, Tasmania township looking west and seeing the main buildings in Alexander Street which is running left to right in photograph. Several buildings have fenced yards among the trees. No official census was ever taken at Balfour but the peak population was estimated to be between 600 and 1000 during it's copper boom. The first official claim was granted in March 1889 but tin was said to be discovered in 1875. The peak period at Balfour was 1909-12 when town lots were surveyed, a police constable arrived, businesses were established and a young doctor arrived in 1910. But the copper boom began to stagnate from about 1913 and most syndicates abandoned their leases. By 1924 copper mining had been abandoned and only a few tin miners scratched out a living at Balfour.
