Description: Captain William Young was a member of the Derwent Whaling Club and partner in a whaling firm. He started off bay whaling out of Hobart. On one occasion his boat was overturned by a whale off Betsy Island and 4 of the 6 crew were drowned. In later years Young was first master of the barque,LADY EMMA. The toast below was made by Young at the launching of this vessel in 1848. "Sudden death to our friends,success to their killers and greasy luck to the whale."
