The small standstone gaol was never used as a permanent detainment but as an overnight stopping place for prisoners being escorted from outlying districts to the Launceston Gaol. Once they were safely locked up, the escorting soldiers were free to enjoy the more amicable accommodation at the nearby Red Feather Inn. The photograph was taken from the southern side in January 1998.
