It is recorded that at one time there were four married couples living at the Arthur River sawmills settlement. The couples only came out about once a month and the only way out to the road was by the wooden tram. Eighteen horses - three teams were used to haul the logs in the bush. As well as the mill work the horses had to be cared for and their shoes replaced.
