Description: View of Balfour, Tasmania township looking east early 1900s. A number of building s among the trees. No official census was ever taken at Balfour but the peak population was estimated to be between 600 and 1000 during it's copper boom. The first official claim was granted in March 1889 but tin was said to be discovered in 1875. The peak period at Balfour was 1909-12 but the copper boom began to stagnate from about 1913 and by 1924 copper mining had been abandoned and only a few tin miners scratched out a living at Balfour.
