      Date: 1939 -

Description: Steel bayonet with wooden pieces screwed to handle grip. Black leather scabbard with metal tips and webbing holder to attach bayonet to soldier's belt. Inscriptions on the blade are "12 42" (refers to manufcturing date - December 1942), "MA 1907" (indicates the Pattern No), XOA and an arrow (indicates quality and flexibility of steel) and "OA" (stands for Orange Arsenal in NSW where bayonets were refurbished prior to issue in W.W.11). Inscription on steel tip of handle is D 1391 (serial number). Bayonet would have been fixed to S.M.L.E. rifle by ring, and mortise slot with locking bolt which secures the bayonet to the rifle nosecap.
