Colonial Sugar Refining Co Ltd

Description: Commonly used hessian sugar bags which held 70 pound of sugar. The bags were branded with the company logo which consists of writing in a circle with leaves at the base. Sugar, flour and other food items were purchased in bulk especially in country areas where transport was limited and the supplies were purchased only a few times a year. The women had to make a lot of jam and preserves for their big families. They used the fruit that they grew in their gardens and blackberries from the fields. The bulk supplies of sugar were very necessary as bread and jam played a big part in their staple diet.
