In 1803 his vessel, the ALBION, was chartered by Governor King to take Bowen to establish a settlement on the Derwent. Bunker had permission from King to catch whales if they were encountered en route. At Oyster Bay on Tasmania's East Coast he captured and tried out 3 whales. He settled on land grants in New South Wales but also continued to pursue a varied maritime career.
