The wooden construction which measured 40 feet by 22 feet together with a two-roomed caretaker's cottage was built for the total cost of 370 pounds on land kindly donated Mr George Scott Senior of "Woodside" near Hagley. The opening day ceremony was performed on the 27th March 1859. Two most impressive and appropriate sermons were preached by Reverend J.A. Manton of "Horton College", Ross, to crowded congregations. In 1864, a further piece of land adjoining the church block was acquired from Mr. Scott for a cemetery. The photograph was taken from the north-eastern direction.
