Most of the young men of the district worked at the sawmills . Most of the mills had houses and single men's huts close by the mill. The train served the mills twice a week and took out the timber before the roads were opened and a rail motor brought the groceries, supplies and other equipment. All the work was done by manual labour there were no chainsaws or bulldozers.
