Company logo of intertwined letters DSMC set in two American flags (stars and stripes) on base. Folding handle. Serial number "588140", is on the badly rusted baseplate, also "DAVIS SMCO DAYTON O PATENTED OCT 17TH 1821 NOV 29TH 1821 JAN 29TH 1833 MAY 12TH 1855". The original manual, titled "ILLUSTRATED DIRECTIONS FOR OPERATING THE NEW VERTICAL FEED Hand Sewing Machine, AND ITS ACCESSORIES AND ATTACHMENTS", is with the machine, together with parts (sewing feet), a Havelock tobacco tin of needles and a tape measure. The measure is 60 inches, coated cotton with brass ends, inscribed "DEAN LONDON". The machine and the parts are contained in a wooden box lined with newspaper from The Australasian (contains dates from 1901). Lid was originally hinged with leather straps, now broken. The machine was originally owned by the Eden family.
