Description: Mrs Amelia Nichols at one of their dams. Amelia was born in the Mallee district of Victoria. Although she and her husband Bill were not born near the sea their business was fishing and trading in Bass Strait. Mrs Nichols could handle a boat, catch and clean fish, muster cattle and manage a farming enterprise and a mutton bird industry. Bill Nichols and his wife Amelia bought Trefoil Island in 1948. Mrs Nichols was known throughout Bass Strait as' Ma' Nichols and she supervised the annual mutton bird operations. She was described as 'fair but almost feared and ruled with a rod of iron' and neither birders or fisherman took alcohol to the island. They sold the island in 1960.
