The plates are colour with full-page wood-cut illustrations with tissue paper between the plates. The book is very worn and had 1506 pages, some are now missing. It was written by George M. Beard M.D. and assisted by eminent medical authorities in the City of New York with numerous chromo and wood cut illustrations. The book was only sold by subscription and published in 1884 by McNeil & Coffee, Sydney NSW. The first owner of this book was Caroline Wagner in the 1880s. Families relied on the information from this book to help treat ailments due to the doctor taking up to two days to travel to Woodsdale.
