      Date: 1930 -

Description: A brown bakelite sphere which separates into two halves, with a cotton ribbon loop at the top. A ball of wool would be placed in the holder, with the wool feeding out through a hole in the base, and the loop placed over the wrist of the knitter. The sphere is ridged. Wool holders prevented the ball of wool from running away from the knitter. Knitting wool originally came in skeins and would be hand wound into balls before commencing knitting. The wool holder originally belonged to Ruth Bowman, who was an avid hand knitter of woollen garments.
