Description: In 1826 Captain William Wilson was one of the 4 founding members of the Derwent Whaling Club. The group instituted a reward to be given to the first person reporting a whale in the river. Profits of the Club were to be divided into 7 shares, 5 for the members, 1 for charity and 1 for the native born youth who displayed most proficiency as a harpooner. Wilson was also a captain and owner of whale ships including the DEVERON.
