Description: In the latter part of 1858, Henry Frith travelled by sea to Circular Head to become the first photographer to record the VDL Company town of Stanley, Tasmania. A complete set of the photographs were purchased by the VDL Company manager James Gibson and eight of these photographs survive today in the VDL Company papers at the Archives of Tasmania. Copies have been made of these photographs and this view of Stanley was one of them and shows the town with a prominent windmill near the present intersection of Cockerill and Victoria Streets.
